By Impeaching Clinton the Republicans Destroy Themselves
©by Doug George-Kanentiio
In its zeal to impeach President Bill Clinton
the Republican Party is brushing aside the will of the American people, a decision which
may result in its own destruction two years from now.
The leaders of the Republicans have spurned any
suggestion of compromise in their fanatical attempt to unseat one of the most popular
chief executives in US history.
The Republican conservative wing has forced the
moderate elements of the party into making a highly controversial and very unpopular
decision to discharge Clinton, a choice many of them would not made had they not been in
fear of losing their positions of power within Congress.
The Republicans seem to have no national agenda
other than the destruction of Clinton, a man whom they have despised since the day he took
office in 1993.
They have allowed their passionate dislike of
Clinton to obscure the real concerns of most Americans. Perhaps it is not so much
what they stand for as the things they are against: national health care, a womans
right to chose, gun control, rational environmental regulations, affirmative action,
unions, a single sales tax to replace the IRS, a higher minimum wage.
Clintons tenure has not necessarily been
an exceptional one; he has had his dreams for the nation compromised, he has been
compelled to retreat on key issues. Yet Clinton has been vindicated by the American people
who perceive him as a flawed president but one who has managed to bring a sense of
security and well being to the nation.
The Republicans have had to endure his
remarkable tenacity as they have grown
ever more frustrated by their failure to convince the public that Clinton is the devil
incarnate.
In an amazing lack of vision, or common sense,
the Republicans have flaunted
the wishes of their own constituents for which there will be retribution.
In Iroquois society, under the traditional
rules of law, such a situation cannot exist. No leader may defy the will of the
people or challenge their judgment by enacting policies or making rules which the
people do not endorse.
A leader in a true democracy is not free to
disregard the wishes of those they are entrusted with governing. The very notion of
a democratic institution is its reliance upon the approval of the electorate; its
representatives are the collective voice of the people. They govern by consent not
by assumption of moral or intellectual prerogative.
Under Iroquois law, no true democratic leader
may assume they are guided by divine right and therefore know what is best for the people
nor may they dismiss their concerns by denigrating the various methods, such as polls,
used to determine the public will.
By narrowing their vision to engage in
prolonged Clinton bashing at considerable public expense the Republicans have lost the
ability to govern. Malice has replaced moderation and emotion has obscured reason
resulting in the paralysis of the federal government.
As stated in a previous column, Iroquois
customs would have taken care of Clintons moral indiscretions by having his
immediate female relatives determine the cause of his behavior and apply such discipline
as they deem fit. The public need not be burdened by what is essentially a family matter.
This common sense approach, which preserves the
dignity of everyone concerned, has no place in a Congress dominated by demagogues and
opportunists who are willing to risk the very future of this nation in pursuit of
vengeance.
The result can only be a legacy of bitterness
and mistrust which will echo across the generations as the Republican Party fades into
obscurity.
